Combating "Postnormal" Hate Speech in Malaysia

This is an ongoing collaborated policy brief project with the Malaysian Centre for Constitutionalism and Human Rights (MCCHR) where we explore how hate speech is evolving in an increasingly complex and uncertain world, drawing on the Postnormal Times (PNT) framework.

“Postnormal times” is an in-between period where “old orthodoxies are dying, new ones have yet to be born, and very few things seem to make sense.” – Ziauddin Sardar, British Pakistani scholar.

It involves exploring the case for and against hate speech bans, and re-examining the current legal and policy responses towards hate speech in Malaysia, and how we can better respond to it.
